GUIDED MATH GROUPS
Attention Parents! This year your child is participating in guided math groups using lessons from the Everyday Math program. Each day I work with your child in small groups, focusing on specific, targeted concepts and skills.
Our guided lesson components include:
Presenting mini lesson- Explicit introduction where the teacher hooks students into the objective with connections. Focus of the lesson is clearly explained presenting learning expectations related to the main concept, skill or strategy. Teacher models/demonstrates and does a guided practice with the group. Teacher checks for understanding.
Student Practice- Students practice skill on their own and take turns sharing strategies with entire group. Teacher is interacting with them. Teacher gives and elicits feedback from children, provides scaffolding, and provides interventions as needed. Teacher can take anecdotal notes and record information in guided math log.
Share Time- Teacher debriefs the day’s lesson by asking probing questions about their math work. Ask students to summarize the focus of the lesson. Teacher checks in to see if any student seeks clarification or has general comments. After that, directions for centers are given.
Additionally your child will work on centers both in partners and independently to further his or her understanding of math concepts or skills. This may be in the form of a game, a manipulative based activity, or using online programs/games such as Everyday Math or ST Math.
